The Counts — What’s It All About

Alright, let’s get funky! I need something to jolt me into action. The other day I found this track by a group named The Counts, and I was immediately in love with the lead voice. It reminds me of  Richie Havens, Teddy Pendergrass and Joe Cocker. Three of my favorites in one package — that’s something.

The Counts released three albums. Today’s pick is from their first one What’s Up Front That Counts (Westbound, 1971). In 1973 Love Sign followed and in 1974 they released Funk Pump for Aware Records. I haven’t heard the latter two. But What’s Up Front … is definitely outstanding.

The album has a jazzy feel in general with a hint of latin rhythm at times, and the lead singer’s strong, gritty, soulful voice is fascinating.

Okay, here the come The Counts, What’s It All About.

Enjoy!
